The Cost of an Employee

Wednesday, September 04, 2019
Many small business owners do not have a firm grasp on the cost of an employee.  The cost is greater than the wage or salary you agree to pay the new employee.  The SBA's article by Barbara Weltman, an attorney and small business advocate, is worth the short read at the SBA's blog.

The SBDC is partially funded by the SBA.

6 Critical Employee Policy Updates for 2018

Article by: Reagan Freed, Solvere HR Consulting

The employment landscape changes frequently, as such employers are encouraged to review and update their Employee Handbook every year. Below are six critical policies employers should review and update in their Employee Handbook:

1. Sexual Harassment Policies
2. Employment Opportunity Policies
3. Review Reasonable Accommodation Policies
4. Comply with New and Updated Leave Laws
5. Safe Driving Policies
6. Amend Smoke-Free Workplace Policies

Don't have a handbook? It may be time for your organization to build one.  Ask the SBDC for some HR referrals.  Also, did you know that the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment has an Employers Handbook (download the guide at this link) and an Employer Toolkit (click here)?

The 6 Do’s and Don’ts of Hiring

Monday, March 13, 2017

Interviewing can be fun and exciting—the thrill of adding new capabilities to your team, thoughts of growth and expansion. Yet, we seldom recognize the cost of moving too quickly. Hiring for the wrong reasons. Rushing the process.

As the old axiom goes: Hire slowly and fire quickly. The cost of taking time to find the right person—and pay them what they are worth—seldom exceeds the cost of retraining, decreased morale and the other costs that go along with hiring a ‘bad fit.’ We can all think of examples of an employee who didn’t really match the culture and dragged down the productivity of those around them once they were made a part of your team. With all that at stake, it’s important to engage in the interview process seriously. Here are a few tips to make your interviews go as smoothly as possible.

The law boosts the standard salary from $23,660 to $47,476 for exempt employees and goes into effect December 1, 2016.  For exempt employees who do not meet the minimum salary requirements of this law, there are several options the business can take to become compliant.

Presenters will present the options that businesses and organizations must consider.  They will coach attendees through salary vs. hourly scenarios and the wage calculations that come with each. Walk away from this training knowing exactly what your company or organization needs to do to be in compliance by the deadline, while keeping your bottom line in mind.  Time for Q&As.

Here is the link to the calendar event online for businesses to register.  A Chamber guest?  Please call (303) 344-1500.
