LEADING EDGE Graduates - May 2015

Thursday, May 07, 2015
Colorado LEADING EDGE is noted for its goal-setting curriculum to have a fully-realized business plan by the end of the course. Of 20 attendees, 18 received Certificates of Graduation and two received Certificates of Participation (with full intention to complete the plan soon). The instructors, Nancy Barnett, who also wrote the curriculum, and Chuck Hahn, Aurora's Small Business Specialist, were diligent to meet in class and one-on-one with the students to help them with each component of the plan. After 12 weeks of intensive learning, graduation finally arrived -- May 6, 2015!

With a catered dinner and prizes awarded, it was a moment for celebration. Pictured below is the first-place winner for the best written business plan. The photo also includes the instructors and sponsors of the program, including Fitzsimons Credit Union, Visit Aurora and the City of Aurora.

The next LEADING EDGE for the Aurora–South Metro SBDC is slated for the fall. To register for one of two free informational sessions, click here.

SBDC Hosts Small Business Week Event

Wednesday, May 06, 2015
The Aurora - South Metro SBDC was pleased to host to the May 6th Small Business Week Luncheon and Awards Ceremony, with 225 honored guests, the U.S. Small Business Administration Colorado District Office staff, respected sponsors and lending institutions, and the area business community. The luncheon and awards program was held at the Summit Conference & Event Center in Aurora, and the Keynote was given by Robert Hill, Associate Administrator with the Office of Field Operations at the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Congressman Mike Coffman greeted the crowd and praised the backbone of our economy -- small businesses.

Emcee Marcia McGilley, Executive Director of the Aurora - South Metro SBDC, presented the first Colorado SBDC Network Award: the Amy McDowell Service to Small Business Award. Amy McDowell was a kind and compassionate civil servant at the U.S. Small Business Administration Colorado District Office. She passed away suddenly last year and left a gaping hole because of her dedicated service to the small business community. The recipient of the award was Andrea Amonick, Development Services Manager for the City of Aurora. Amonick made it possible to merge the Aurora SBDC with the South Metro SBDC, convincing the City of Aurora to serve as host to the SBDC, which can now provide more resources to the Aurora small business community. Andrea also oversees several Urban Renewal projects, including the expansion of the Aurora Cultural Arts District and the development of the Gardens On Havana (formerly Buckingham Square) -- to name just two of many successful projects.  Congratulations, Andrea! Well deserved!
